Job Overview

Under the direct supervision of the Water/Wastewater Lead Hand or Utilities Manager, the Jr. Operator is responsible for:  

  • Conducting routine maintenance and inspections on water and wastewater systems, fire hydrants, and related infrastructure. 
  • Assisting with installing, repairing, and replacing water distribution and wastewater collection system components. 
  • Monitoring and recording system performance data, including water quality and operational metrics. 
  • Supporting emergency response efforts, including troubleshooting and repairs during system failures or service disruptions. 
  • Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety regulations and industry best practices. 
  • Assisting in the development and refinement of operational procedures. 
  • Providing feedback and recommendations on system improvements and capital works projects. 
  • Maintaining detailed records and reports on maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs. 
  • Operating and maintaining equipment and tools used in utility system maintenance. 
  • Collaborating with other municipal departments, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure effective utility operations.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & experience:  

Your resume and cover letter must clearly describe how you meet the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean driving record. 
  • Current Standard First Aid/CPR certification. 
  • WHMIS certification. 
  • Ability to lift and handle items up to 35kg. 
  • Mechanical aptitude and ability to operate tools and equipment commonly used in water and wastewater operations. 
  • Basic understanding of municipal utility codes, Alberta utility standards, and occupational health and safety regulations. 
  • Previous experience in water/wastewater operations or municipal utility maintenance is an asset. 
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic, geometric, and mechanical principles relevant to utility system operations is an asset. 
  • Enrollment in or completion of Alberta provincial certification in water treatment, water distribution, and wastewater collection is an asset. 
  • Familiarity with GIS mapping and asset management software is an asset.
