Position Overview:

These are moderately experienced ski patrollers with a minimum of one (1) season of experience at Marmot Basin or over three (3) seasons at another comparable ski hill. The Patroller has exceeded all Grade 1 performance requirements and has demonstrated their ability to function as a strong independent Ski Patroller. These Patrollers are starting to become familiar with the minutia of ski patrolling and when directed can teach certain skills to others or lead small work projects.

The incumbent should expect to be working outside in any, all and sometimes adverse weather conditions.

This is a full-time seasonal role within the Safety Operations Department. This position has a compressed schedule/two-week rotating cycle: Nine (9) hours per day (operating season), eight (8) hours per day (non-operating season).

Alberta Employment Standards regarding probationary periods apply.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide on-hill rescue, first aid and triage: attend, treat and transport patients using the minimum required manpower resources
  • On-slope risk management: identify and mitigate hazards on the hill (run checks, hazard marking)
  • On-slope maintenance: perform trail maintenance as required (snow farming, shoveling, fencing etc.), maintenance cuts in open avalanche terrain
  • When directed can instruct basic patrol topics to Probationary and Grade 1 Ski Patrollers, including: sweeps, hazard marking, rescue toboggans (10-23) use
  • Act as a Team Member during avalanche control missions, including working as an assistant blaster
  • Act as a Team leader during lift evacuations, perform intermediate skills associated with “Lift down procedures (10-30’s)” as well as manual lift evacuation
  • Act as a Team Member during avalanche rescue and missing person response
  • Perform end of day area checks and sweeps
  • Enforce the “Alpine Responsibility Code”, slow riding zones, area closures
  • Identify and address safety concerns pertaining to staff and guests. Ensure supervisors are made aware of residual risks of concern
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment locations, use, and movement
  • Skillfully apply Marmot Basin’s radio procedures and protocols
  • Demonstrated understanding of the roles/responsibilities of the Dispatch position, cover Dispatch as required
  • Operate snowmobiles
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner as a member of the Safety Operations team
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Exceeded all performance requirements for a Grade 1 Ski Patroller
  • Demonstrated strong skiing ability in all mountain and snow conditions in “Advanced/Most difficult” and “Expert/Extreme” terrain
  • Physically fit and able to ski with heavy loads (25+ kg). Has proven physical ability to perform all grade 1 ski patroller tasks
  • 80 hour advanced First Aid course or higher, has completed all annual training and recertification
  • Current CPR certification.
  • At least 30 patient interactions.
  • Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA) Industry training Program (ITP) level1  
  • Attended Marmot Basins Annual explosives refresher
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 (preferred)
  • Demonstrated basic snowmobile operator skills; intermediate snowmobile operator skills preferred
  • Have a Natural Resources Canada Explosive Regulatory Division letter of approval to handle high powered explosives
  • Clear Criminal Record and Vulnerable Person Record Check on file with Human Resources
  • Completed the Workplace hazardous materials training (WHMIS)
  • Completion of basic fall arrest training
  • Rope rescue training/certification (preferred)
  • Alberta Class 5 Driver’s license, or equivalent
