Job Overview

The Fire Captain of Prevention is responsible for overseeing and managing firefighting, rescue operations, medical emergencies, and property protection using the Incident Command System (ICS). This role also functions as a fire inspector, public fire and life safety educator, and assists with fire investigations. The Fire Captain coordinates key fire prevention initiatives, including the FireSmart and Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) programs.Additionally, this position serves as a Duty Officer on a rotational basis and provides leadership in the absence of the Fire Chief (FC) or Deputy Fire Chief (DFC).

This is a 2 year extended term position. The start date of this position as soon as possible.

Work performed:  

Fire Prevention and Inspection:

  • Conduct fire prevention inspections in buildings and occupancies according to the Quality Management Plan of the Municipality of Jasper, preparing and maintaining detailed records and reports.
  • Assist the FC and DFC in fire investigations, determining the cause and origin of fires, obtaining and preserving evidence, and preparing reports on fire incidents, including estimates of losses.
  • Prepare and present fire prevention programs and demonstrations, including fire extinguisher training, station tours, and home safety plans.

Emergency Response:

  • Respond to emergencies such as structural fires, motor vehicle accidents, and hazardous materials incidents, providing on-scene command in conjunction with the FC or DFC.
  • Assist with ensuring operational readiness of department personnel and equipment.
  • Act as the FC or DFC in their absence, providing leadership and support to the department.

Program Coordination:

  • Coordinate the FireSmart program for the Municipality of Jasper, which includes conducting home assessments, overseeing the neighborhood recognition program, and leading informational sessions on fire prevention.
  • Manage the Forest Resource Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) program, including grant applications, wildfire mitigation strategies, and fuel reduction efforts.

Leadership and Personnel Management:

  • Assist the FC and DFC in the recruitment and selection of volunteer firefighters.
  • Evaluate the performance of volunteer firefighters, identifying training and skill development needs in consultation with the FC and DFC.

Health and Safety:   

  • Perform all duties in accordance with the Health & Safety Program approved by the Municipality of Jasper, as well as Occupational Health & Safety regulations and the Emergency Management Plan.
  • Abide by all relevant Canadian laws, Provincial statutes, Municipal Bylaws, the Safety Codes Act, and Building and Fire Codes.

  • Minimum of three years of firefighting experience, with experience as an officer.
  • Basic Fire Safety Codes Officer - Group A
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter – Level 2.
  • NFPA 1002 Driver/Pump Operator/Aerial Operator Level.
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer – Level 2.
  • NFPA 1051 Wildland Firefighter.
  • ICS Canada – I-200.
