Reporting to the Grounds Lead Hand, the Grounds Operator plays a key role in maintaining the Municipality of Jasper’s parks and green spaces. The position involves skilled grounds maintenance, equipment operation, and support for assigned areas throughout the townsite. The Grounds Operator helps ensure safe, clean, and attractive public spaces while assisting other departments as needed.
Work performed:
The Grounds Operator must be adaptable and resourceful when responding to weather, equipment, or safety concerns. Through teamwork, communication, and positive interactions with staff and the community, this role directly supports the Municipality’s service quality and public image.
Grounds Maintenance
• Maintain municipal grounds, parks, and sports fields (mowing, trimming, edging, weeding, fertilizing, seeding, watering, litter removal, snow removal).
• Support irrigation and turf management, horticulture, and arboriculture tasks.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
• Operate and maintain equipment (tractors, mowers, trimmers, blowers, aerators) including routine servicing.
• Operate recycling equipment, including balers, and assist with handling recyclable materials.
Safety & Compliance
• Follow all Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) policies and procedures.
• Participate in required safety training programs.
• Assist Roads and Solid Waste departments with snow removal, road maintenance, and waste collection activities as needed.
• Work collaboratively with other municipal staff to support operations.
• Provide subject matter expertise to support the Grounds Lead Hand with daily tasks.
• Administrative and Reporting Duties
• Document and report incidents, accidents, and equipment repairs to supervisors.
• Prioritize and manage tasks to meet operational deadlines.
• Participate in municipal committees and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required
• High School Diploma or GED
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license (class 3 preferred) with air brake endorsement
• Knowledge of grounds keeping practices
• 2 years’ experience in one or more of the following areas:
o Turf Management
o Irrigation Systems
o Arboriculture
o Equipment operation
o Horticulture
Preferred
• First Aid/CPR certificate preferred
• Forklift, loader, and/or skid steer certification preferred
• Equivalencies may be considered on the basis of one year experience for one year of education.
