Job Overview

The Business Liaison plays a pivotal role in supporting business development in Jasper as part of the wildfire recovery efforts. This position is essential for fostering collaboration, driving innovation, and building partnerships to help businesses recover and thrive post-wildfire. The Business Liaison will work closely with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure alignment with the Municipality's strategic priorities and Joint Recovery Coordination Centre (JRCC) objectives while promoting transparent communication and engagement with local businesses, recognizing the unique characteristics of Jasper’s tourism-based economy. This role also plays a key part in translating strategic objectives into actionable plans and ensuring that businesses are empowered to navigate recovery challenges. 

This is a two-year term position with a possibility of extension.

Work performed:  

Business Support and Community Engagement 

  • Act as the central point of contact within the municipal organizational structure for all businesses, ensuring streamlined communication and support. 
  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders regarding recovery initiatives, changes in processes, and upcoming projects to ensure
  • Focus on business retention and expansion within the context of wildfire recovery, identifying and addressing the unique needs of recovering businesses. 
  • Lead a project to assess and modernize the Municipality’s business licensing system to ensure efficient processing, compliance, and responsive support to local businesses.

Strategic Planning and Alignment 

  • Apply an economic lens to Jasper’s recovery efforts, and recommend strategies and initiatives that align with sustainable business growth and resilience.
  • Work to align wildfire recovery efforts and business engagement with Council’s strategic priorities.
  • Develop and implement strategies aimed at supporting business development post-wildfire, including setting goals, conducting appraisals, and fostering a culture of accountability

Collaboration and Partnerships 

  • Partner with the Urban Design & Standards department to share a business perspective in discussions on land use planning and development.
  • Collaborate with industry stakeholders and the Municipal Housing Coordinator to evaluate and understand the demand for staff accommodations, working toward sustainable and supportive solutions.
  • Liaise with local businesses, community organizationsand governmental bodies to align initiatives with wildfire recovery goals and corporate strategies.

Data-Driven Decision Making and Change Facilitation

  • Leverage internal and external data to inform and assist with decision-making processes, enhancing the efficacy of recovery initiatives. 
  • Balance the needs of local businesses with municipal goals to facilitate both recovery and sustainable growth.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & experience:  Your resume and cover letter must clearly describe how you meet the following qualifications:

Required 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Economic Development, or a related field. 
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in business development, economic recovery, or a similar role. 
  • Experience working with municipal or government entities. 

Preferred 

  • Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC), Ec.D.certification 
  • Current membership in EDAC and/or Economic Developers Alberta (EDA) 
  • Experience in disaster recovery or crisis management contexts
